PETROGLYPHS OF ZAONEZHJE ARE ETERNAL WRITINGS. Karelian writings on rocks are among the most significant Karelian sightseeings. These unusual artifacts of culture bring us to the world of primeval art. They help to understand world and attitude of ancient people. Drawings on the rocks, figures and signs are mythological images, which reflected perception of ancient people about surrounding world, their divinities and heroes.


MOUNTAIN OF THE HIGHEST STRIKE. It is praised in Kalevala runes, Karelian-Finnish epos. In is the mountain, where the iron rain fell from the sky. In ancient times cult pagan ceremonies had been carried out with victims to the God of Fire. Ancient people used to worship where the Sky had sent iron to them. They set ritual fires, and the Sky answered to them sending iron arrows of lightning to the top of the mountain. Here the trees grow with roots up. There is Sacred Grove here. Moraines are the artifacts of the Ice Age. Calmness and silence rule here. This is place of Power.Place of ancient energy.


KIVACH WATERFALL – the second European largest plain waterfall. It was founded by Gavriil Derzhavin, the first governor of Olonets region, in 1785. While getting acquainted with the region’s lands, he was the first of the famous people who visited Kivach waterfall – impetuous, foamy, stone-like – and praised it in his lyrics and odes, making it famous in the whole Russia. Thousands of tourists come to the waterfall to obey its charming beauty and become the silent witness of the eternal struggle between two elements –

SWAN’S SONG of the Russian North. Top of the wooden hip-roof architecture is Dormitory Church in Kondopoga. The beautiful church stands on the ledge of the narrow stone cape, washing by the waters of Onega Lake from three sides. Strict silhouette of the church stands proudly and lonely on the background of the blue northern sky. Specialists call it Swan’s Song of the wooden construction, top of the hip-roof architecture.


KORNILE-PALEOSTROVSKY FRATRY – one of the most ancient Karelian monasteries. It was founded by Cornelius in the beginning of the XV century. Monk from Valaam was given by the permission to enlighten the pagans. He began to live on the Paley Island and left after him a lot of followers and wonderworks. Zosimus of Solovki became monk here, the founder of Solovki Monastery. Monks of Old Believe, survived after devastation of Solovki Monastery by the tsar guardians, moved to live here. Here massive self-immolations of the old believers took place. Here hallows of Cornelius Paleostrovsky are kept. Grand dukes of Moscow, and then Russian tsars, granted the monastery with money and jewelry. Now two monks and two conventuals live here.


FORTIFIED LOCALITY OF MEDVEZHJEGORSK – echo of the past war (1941-1944).
After Medvezhjegorsk was taken over by Finnish troops in 1941, Finnish commanders began to think about construction of fortified locality on the territory of the city. By the middle of 1944 all tops of the rocks became integrated structures, built in the rocks and perfectly hidden. One can see open firing slits of the pillboxes, armored hoods with holes for observation and shooting, barracks and shelters inside the rocks, dragon’s teeth – antitank barriers.


ALEXANDER SVIRSKY MONASTERY - Alexander was the famous Russian wonderworker. Enemies of the Russian state were beaten by prayers to him. By his protection the barren women were giving birth to their children, family conflicts were solved, sick people had recovered. At the present time the temples and monastery buildings are renovated, liturgical life is up and running. Miraculous event of the monastery life is myrrh-spilling of the Alexander Svirsky’s hallows. And all who have different deadly afflictions, will recover by coming to his coffin and touching it with faith. The news about God’s sacred one are fastly spread across the Earth, and thousands of pilgrims come to the far Northern lands, to the Svirsky’s mansion. 



MUROMSKY MONASTERY – is situated on the eastern coast of Onega Lake, on the narrow – about one kilometer – strip of the earth, between two lakes. It was founded in the XIV century by Abba Lazarus, the monk, from Roman High-Mountain Mansion. He had chosen real place, which perfectly matched for harsh asceticism. The reverend had a lot of work, had suffered from local semiferal tribes, until the monastery had become citadel of the Orthodox in the harsh northern region. During the founder’s life conventuals from Kiev had constructed first of all Pomorje’s the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin of Pechora. It stands on the place showed by God, where Lazarus had seen the woman in light and gold, and men worshipping to her. At the present time monastery is still place of strict lonely life.


CITY AT DIVA MOUNTAIN – Medvezhjegorsk is large regional center. History of the city is the history of wood processing plants, construction of Murmansk railroad and Belomorsko-Baltic Channel. With the beginning of its construction the settlement became large transition point for prisoners. In thirties of the 20th century is the center of Gulag. Enterprise called JSC Karelskie uzori produces linen goods with Zaonezhje needlework on bed-clothes, table clothes, napkins and clothes. 15 kilometers far from the city are memorial complex called Sandarmoch – repository of victims of massive political repressions. Povenets is located 26 kilometers far from Medvezhjegorsk to the south. In ancient times it was trade place of Obonezhje. Path of pilgrims to the sacraments of Solovki Monastery lied through Povenets. Peter the First had constructed Osudareva Road from White Sea to Onega Lake through forests and swamps. On the bank of Povechanka river there are ruins of 2 blast furnaces of the former Petrovsky iron processing plant. Archeologists point that Povenets is one of the primeval man’s settlement at Onega Lake.


DESCENDANTS OF PROPHETIC BLACKSMITH ILMARINEN. We invite you to make interesting trip to Petrozavodsk – capital of Republic of Karelia, to get acquainted with 300 years of the history of the city. THREE BEARS ZOOLOGICAL COMPLEX. It is the first Karelian zoo complex. Northern deers, brown bears, elks, lynxes, polar foxes, eagles, wolves, foxes and even chinchilla live in open-air cages in natural conditions. Animals are brought here by different ways – some were brought by woodmen, some got injured and weren’t able to live in forest anymore, some were bought transported here, to Karelia. Guests of zoo complex are met by the Karelian taiga master – wood demon. He keeps order in the forest and guards its inhabitants. Also he makes dreams come true, just ask him! You will hear qualified story about peculiarities of nature and inhabitants of the Karelian forests. Also you can not only watch animals, but also feed them.


RAFTING – is mortification of speedy Karelian rivers, full of rapids. Today it is one of the most popular kind of water tourism. Even children can do it. Rafts are pneumatic floats, safe and stable. Pneumatic boat, survival vest, cap and oar – and you are one-on one to the water. Instructor will follow you for all trip. For the beginners Shuya river is appropriate: 3 rapids of 1st and 2nd difficulty categories. After overcoming of several drops you will jump from the small waterfall – Big Tolly rapid. Excitement! Adrenaline! Drive! Sense of crew! This is rafting. Picnic at fire (fish soup with green, pasta po-flotski, kalitka, vegetable mix (fresh cucumbers and tomatoes), slices (cheese, sausage), lemons and oranges, bread, mineral water, tea, coffee, cookies. IDOLS’ FIELD – acquaintance with national cultures of the Stone Age in Karelia. Idols’ Field is unique sanctuary of ancient Saami, with no analogues in Europe. Only here one can find ancient erotic sculpture, cenotaph, tribal totems and other stone idols, with images of gods, which more than 3 thousand years ago were worshipped and pleased by victims. You will visit places, where ancient civilization died 4200 years ago because of the earth-quake. Besides this, you will see artifact of wooden architecture – chapel of the 18th century and ruins of antique Karelian village, Pegrema. Pegrema was also long-term settlement of primeval people. Open-air museum shows 10 thousand years of local peoples’ activity. These people created their own culture and civilization: strange signs on the rocks, ornaments on the surface of clay bowels, silica tips of arrows and pikes, they had learned useful features of natural copper.
